Limestone Beekeepers’ Guild History
Our history 1986 – Present
Harrowsmith Beekeepers Guild held its 1st meeting on the fall of 1986 with Bill Kirby as its president. It quickly became The Limestone Beekeepers’ Guild to encompass the whole area around Kingston and we now have members from Lansdowne to Aldolphustown. Since 2010 our membership has expanded so we moved to the library in Sydenham in 2013, then to our present venue at the Kingston Fellowship Centre on Hwy 38 in 2016.
We have had numerous informative speakers at our monthly meetings. We also hosted the Ontario Beekeepers Association Conference in 2000 and welcomed the OBA Tech Transfer team for two workshops here in 2015. Many of our members are active in our mentorship program or help to catch swarms reported annually. We also have an annual honey contest where members can learn about the quality of their product and win prizes as well as bragging rights.
The highlight of each year is our June picnic at various members’ homes where we can share a meal, see different beekeeping techniques and of course talk bees.
Since COVID 19 hit in 2020 our activities have been reduced. Although we have managed to keep in touch through a few zoom meetings and 2 outdoor gatherings we are all anxiously awaiting the return to normal. (Update: Meetings are now back in session.)
